Life With a Shih Tzu Who Loves Comfort

If you ever meet my dog Smokey, you will see right away that he is a character. He is a mix of cuddles, stubbornness, and pure charm wrapped in silky fur. Smokey loves his naps, his walks, and his time spent following me around the house like a fluffy shadow. But there is one thing he cannot stand. Rainy days.

The moment the skies turn gray and raindrops tap on the windows, Smokey changes. His usual excitement at the leash disappears. His tail droops. His eyes say it all. He is thinking,

“Please do not make me go out there. Not on that wet ground.”

The Standoff at the Door

When I open the door on a rainy day, the battle begins. Smokey takes one look outside, sniffs the damp air, and freezes. He stretches one paw forward as if testing the ground. Then he pulls it back like the grass might bite. His big brown eyes lift up to mine, pleading with me to change my mind.

To him, wet grass might as well be lava. No amount of gentle coaxing convinces him otherwise. I tug the leash. He plants his paws. I take a step forward. He sits down. More often than not, the routine ends the same way. I scoop him up in my arms. He leans against me like a baby, safe and dry, while I do all the walking.

A Shih Tzu in Style

It has become our rainy day tradition. I walk through puddles while Smokey rides above it all, warm and spoiled, his little head resting on my shoulder. People passing by cannot help but smile. Some laugh outright. “That is one pampered pup,” they say. And they are right. He is pampered. But the look of peace on his face makes me laugh too.

Smokey does not care what others think. He knows what he likes, and he knows what he does not. Wet paws? Absolutely not. Being carried like royalty? Yes, please.

The Little Lessons Hiding in Rainy Days

At first, I thought this quirk was just silly. But over time I realized it taught me something. Smokey reminds me that it is okay to dislike discomfort. It is okay to stand your ground and say, “This is not for me.” He also reminds me that love often looks like carrying each other through what we cannot handle alone.

His rainy day standoff makes me laugh, but it also makes me pause. Because how often do we humans push ourselves into things that make us miserable, forgetting it is okay to rest, okay to ask for help, okay to be carried for a while. Smokey does not hide his needs. He shows them boldly, and he trusts that he will be loved anyway.

A Connection Beyond the Rain

Rainy days with Smokey are not about frustration anymore. They are about connection. He trusts me to keep him comfortable. I learn to smile at his quirks instead of fighting them. Together we find a way through the drizzle, him safe in my arms and me learning that joy can live in the silliest of routines.

Why Dogs Make Rainy Days Brighter

Dogs like Smokey bring laughter into places where it does not seem to fit. On a gloomy, wet day, when most people sigh and complain, Smokey gives us a story to remember. Instead of a dreaded walk, it becomes a moment of joy. Instead of an ordinary day, it becomes a memory that lingers.

Rainy days remind me that even simple annoyances can turn into something beautiful when shared with a dog. Smokey may hate the rain, but the love and laughter he gives us because of it makes every storm worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

So yes, my Shih Tzu hates rainy days. He refuses wet grass, stops at the door like a stubborn king, and happily rides in my arms while the rest of us splash through puddles. But hidden in his dislike for rain is a lesson about love, patience, and joy.

Smokey reminds me that life’s little quirks are often the very things that bring the most laughter. And when I carry him through the drizzle, I realize that sometimes love means carrying each other through the storms, no matter how small they may seem.

If Smokey’s rainy day adventures made you smile, there are many more stories in my book Smokey The Little Dog That Saved Us. You can find it at LifeWithSmokey.com, where every chapter is filled with love, laughter, and the healing power of one little dog.
