Note: This blog is based on my true story and real experiences with Smokey. Every dog is different. While I share from the heart, always consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your dog’s health or breathing.
A Nose That Tells a Story
When people look at Smokey, they always notice his big round eyes, his fluffy coat, and his sweet little underbite. But what makes me smile the most is his nose. That tiny black button may look small, but in our home it has carried more meaning than I could ever explain.
The Shih Tzu nose is more than cute. It is how they see the world. It is how they comfort us, how they sense our emotions, and how they remind us of life’s smallest but most important details.
The Shih Tzu Nose and Brachycephalic Beauty
Shih Tzus belong to a group of dogs called brachycephalic. That is just a big word for short-nosed. Their flat faces and little button noses are what give them their signature look. Smokey has the kind of face that makes strangers stop in their tracks, smiling at his squishy lion-dog expression.
But being short-nosed also means Smokey’s breathing sounds are different from other dogs. Sometimes he snorts or huffs, and sometimes he even snores louder than my husband. It makes us laugh, but it is also a reminder that Shih Tzus need a little extra care. We keep Smokey cool on hot days, avoid over-exercise, and always watch his breathing.
When Reverse Sneezing First Appeared
One of the scariest things that ever happened with Smokey’s nose was the first time he had a reverse sneezing episode. If you have never seen it, it looks terrifying. His body stiffened, his little nose pulled in short, sharp breaths, and he made a sound like a honk, as if he could not breathe.
I remember freezing in panic. My heart dropped and I grabbed the phone to call our vet. For those seconds it felt like time stopped. I thought we were about to lose him.
Our vet reassured us. Reverse sneezing is common in Shih Tzus and other brachycephalic breeds. The soft palate in the back of their throat can spasm, causing those strange and scary noises. It usually passes quickly and does not cause harm.
Over six years, Smokey has only had about fifteen of these episodes. Each one feels heavy in the moment, but then he shakes it off and goes right back to being his happy little self.
What We Learned To Do
The most important lesson we learned was to stay calm. The first time I wanted to shout and cry, but that only made Smokey more anxious. Our vet taught us that staying calm helps the episode pass more quickly.
Now when it happens, we gently rub his throat or lightly cover his nose for a second so he swallows and resets his breathing. Within moments, his little tail starts wagging again, almost as if nothing happened.
Smokey looks at us in those moments as if to say, I told you I would be okay.
The Nose That Comforts
Smokey’s nose is not only about sniffing out treats or inspecting his bunny water stand. It is also his way of comforting us. When my husband struggles with PTSD, Smokey nudges his nose gently against his chest or arm. It is his way of saying, I am here. You are not alone.
He does the same with me. When I am sad or stressed, Smokey presses his cold little nose against my hand. No words, no judgment, just presence. Somehow that tiny nose carries more love and reassurance than anything I could ever say.
Lessons From a Little Nose
Living with Smokey has taught me that comfort does not always need words. Sometimes it is a soft nudge from a little nose that says more than a thousand conversations.
His nose has taught me to pay attention to the small things. To notice when someone needs closeness, to slow down enough to feel, to realize that love often arrives in the smallest gestures.
Final Thoughts
The Shih Tzu nose may look tiny, but it is full of purpose. It is Smokey’s guide to the world, his tool for comfort, and his way of showing us love without words. To me, his little button nose is not just cute. It is a reminder of patience, comfort, and connection.
