Dogs have a different kind of soul. Not human, but pure and full of emotion. They love without judgment and forgive without question. Each one carries a purpose that makes them unique and deeply connected to us.
When my husband Dennis and I brought Smokey home, it was not something we rushed into. We thought about it for years. We asked ourselves if we were truly ready emotionally, financially, and mentally to care for a dog for his lifetime. Smokey became Dennis’s emotional support animal, but over time, he became much more than that. He became family.
Question
How Do I Choose the Right Dog for Me?
The Answer
Choosing the right dog begins long before you bring one home. It starts with understanding your lifestyle, your habits, and the kind of connection you want to have. Every dog is different, just like every person. Some are full of energy and curiosity, while others are calm and comforting.
If you love the outdoors, breeds like Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, or Australian Shepherds will match your energy. If you prefer a quiet and cozy life, smaller companions like Shih Tzus, Cavaliers, or Bichons might be perfect for you.
The secret is finding a dog whose rhythm feels natural beside yours. When that happens, you do not just get a pet, you gain a loyal soul who understands your world in silence.
Smokey’s Story
When my husband Dennis and I decided to bring Smokey home, it was not a quick choice. We talked about it for years. Smokey was meant to be my husband’s emotional support dog, but he became much more than that.
Before we met him, most people said Shih Tzus are happy to stay indoors. But Smokey proved them wrong. He loves the outdoors. He loves feeling the wind, watching the trees, and seeing life move around him. It made me realize that, just like people, dogs have their own personalities and needs.
Smokey also protects us in his own way. He watches the door, listens to every sound, and lets out a bark whenever something feels off. His bark may be small, but it carries courage. That is why Shih Tzus are called Little Lions. Their roar sounds like a lion trapped inside a tiny body, proud, brave, and a little dramatic.
Smokey reminds me that protection and love do not come from size, they come from devotion.
Practical Tip
Before getting a dog, take your time. Visit shelters, talk to breeders, and watch how dogs behave. Volunteer at a rescue or babysit a friend’s dog to see what daily care really looks like. You can even work part time at a dog daycare or help at a boarding place to learn about their needs.
If you are rarely home, consider a pet like a cat who is more independent. Dogs crave connection and routine. They want to share your laughter, your quiet moments, and your life.
Reflection
Dogs have a different kind of soul. Some bring laughter, some bring comfort, and some, like Smokey, bring peace and purpose. When you are ready for that kind of love, the right dog will find you.
