Faith is not proven in an easy days. It is proven in the fire, when life breaks you and you still find courage to hold on. Our story is one of scars, love and survival, but also of faith that carried us through.

Faith That Is Forged, Not Fragile

Faith is often spoken of in soft tones, as if it is delicate or only meant for peaceful moments. But real faith, the kind that carries you through trauma, is not fragile. It is forged in fire. It is raw, unsteady at times, and often born in the middle of questions that have no easy answers.

When PTSD walked into our home, faith was not polished or perfect. It was messy. It was whispered in tears when nights felt unbearable. It was clung to in silence when there were no words left. It was not about strength I had on my own. It was about leaning into a presence greater than me, even when I did not understand.

What Faith and PTSD Looked Like in the Darkness

Faith in the fire looked nothing like peace on the surface. It looked like opening my eyes after sleepless nights and choosing to believe morning would bring strength. It looked like holding my husband’s hand when fear overtook him and trusting God to give me patience I did not naturally have.

It also looked like Smokey curling against us, a quiet reminder that God’s love can show up in unexpected ways. A little dog pressing close in the night became one of the many ways faith whispered, you are not alone.

Wrestling With Questions

There were nights when I cried out, Why this pain. Why this battle. Why him. I wanted answers that never came. But in the middle of my questions, I received something different. I received presence. Not a booming miracle, but a quiet assurance that God was still with us.

Faith did not erase the trauma. It did not silence every nightmare or take away every trigger. But it gave me the strength to stay. It gave me the courage to love when fear said it was impossible. It gave me patience when my own heart felt empty. That was faith alive in me, even when I did not recognize it.

Faith Does Not Erase the Fire

One of the hardest lessons I learned was that faith does not remove the fire. It does not always take us out of the battle. Sometimes it carries us through it. Faith is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about standing in brokenness and still believing that love is stronger than fear, that healing is still possible, and that God has not left us.

My husband’s PTSD did not vanish because of faith. But our marriage endured because of it. Love deepened because of it. And hope survived because faith kept reminding me that the story was not over.

Choosing to Stay When It Hurt

Faith often came down to a simple choice: the choice to stay. To stay in the marriage. To stay beside my husband when walking away would have felt easier. To stay in prayer when answers seemed distant. Faith is not about being unshaken. It is about holding on even when you are trembling.

Each time I chose to stay, even in fear, faith grew a little stronger. Each time I whispered “help me” in the dark, faith became a little more alive.

Where Faith Becomes Real

I have learned that faith is not proven in the easy days. It is proven in the hardest nights, when everything in you wants to give up but somehow you take one more step. That is when faith becomes real, raw, and alive.

Smokey became part of that faith journey too. He did not know words like prayer or trust, but his presence reminded me that God often sends comfort in small, unexpected forms.

Sometimes faith looks like a sunrise. Sometimes it looks like a Shih Tzu pressing close to remind you that love still exists.

Final Thoughts

Our story has been one of trauma and pain, but it has also been a story of faith. A faith that carried us through nights we thought would never end. A faith that reminded us to love even when it was hard. A faith that showed us that healing is possible, even when scars remain.

If you are walking through your own fire right now, I want you to know that faith does not have to be perfect. It does not have to be big. It can be as small as a whisper that says, I will keep going. That too is faith.

I share more of this journey in my memoir, a true story of survival, faith and PTSD. You can find it at LifeWithSmokey.com, where love, hope, and healing are woven into every page.

Why Dogs Sit Close When We’re Struggling

Some days Smokey does not leave my husband’s side. He simply moves closer and stays. When PTSD feels heavy, his quiet comfort reminds us that love can be steady, gentle, and healing.
